In a heartbreaking incident in Ghaziabad’s Kaushambi area on Saturday afternoon, traffic constable Ankit Tomar lost his life while attempting to rescue a woman, Aarti, who had allegedly jumped into a drain following a domestic dispute.

Despite valiant rescue efforts, Tomar’s body was recovered after a two-hour search operation. A sub-inspector, who also jumped in to assist, was safely pulled out along with Aarti.

According to DCP (Trans-Hindon) Nimish Patil, the worst was feared when Tomar went missing in the muck-filled drain. He was later found dead, marking a tragic end to his act of bravery.

Aarti, a resident of Salawa village, claimed she jumped into the drain after a fight with her husband over a theft issue. She said she couldn’t swim and credited another woman for saving her life — not the police.

However, eyewitnesses disputed Aarti’s version, saying both Tomar and the sub-inspector risked their lives to rescue her, while she refused to cooperate. One witness said, “Her head was clearly above water; it seemed like she did know how to swim. The constable, however, couldn’t make it out alive.”

Police have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact sequence of events.

This tragic loss of a dedicated officer highlights the risks law enforcement personnel take daily in their line of duty — sometimes at the cost of their own lives.
